Books! Books, Mama! I Need Books!

This is what Kaden has woken up saying the last few mornings, and I've got to say, I couldn't agree with his sentiment more.  Of course, when he says this, it sounds more like, "I neeee books!"  Just like when he says "I read books," it sounds more like, "I reeeeee books!"  It does my English-teacher heart proud to hear him say this; I'm not going to lie.

I need books, too.  It's just part of who I am.  When I have nothing to read, I feel this sense of anxiety, like something is terribly wrong.  Something is missing.

I just finished reading Sarah's Key.  Today.  While Kaden was napping.  When I should have been doing laundry.  Don't judge me

Did you know they made a movie based on this book?  I had no idea.  Where have I been?

I don't know if I will ever see it.  The book was so tragically sad, that I don't know if I can handle two hours of reliving it on film.

My journey through The Thirteenth Tale, which was my most recent read before embarking on the guilt-fest The Science of Parenting (do NOT read this book if you have ever let your child cry), reminded me a lot of my experience with Sarah's Key.  I got swept up in both stories and couldn't put them down, but was kind of left voicing an anti-climactic, "Huh" at the end of each.

I'm looking for a new book.  Something that won't make me feel like a terrible mother. (Although when I got to the chapter in the aforementioned book that said you should disregard the commonly accepted advice not to sleep with your infant, because even a newborn baby would not let itself be suffocated, I stopped reading and felt a heck of a lot better about myself.  Suddenly, the text had lost some serious credibility with me.  My favorite part of this chapter was when they said to make sure you were in a well-rested alert state when sleeping with an infant.  HA!  Who is well-rested and alert while caring for a newborn in the middle of the night?  The times I did fall asleep while rocking Kaden, I was a sleep-deprived MESS!)

Anyway, back to the book search.  Any suggestions?

Game of Thrones Series. All 4.5 thousand awesome pages of it (as of book 5).

  2. The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery, The Sunday Philosophy Club series by Alexander McCall Smith, the Flavia de Luce series by Alan Bradley, The Blue Castle by L.M. Montgomery, The Spellman Files (and the whole Spellman series) by Lisa Lutz, Possession by A.S. Byatt, and Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day by Winifred Watson. Off the top of my head.

  3. I saw the movie after I read the book and it was not as good as the book. :) As for recommendations--have you read Unbroken yet? Also, These is My Words. Awesome!

  4. Just finished "On Little Wings" by Regina Soiris (I might be spelling the last name wrong) and really liked it. You have probably covered our list pretty well but I have loved almost every book we have read in our book club lasvegasladiesofliterature.blogspot.com

I think all the time after looking at your 'finished reading' section, I wonder if she liked that book? I think we need a good 'katie the english teacher' source so you can tell us what we should be reading! I promise to look for themes and character development if you do! :)

  5. The Maisy Dobbs Mystery series. She's a british detective in between the world wars. It was so fun to be right back in London again. Especially in such fashionable clothes.

Have you read any Edith Wharton? I adore her. She's got sass, and she's so sharp. I think I like House of Mirth more than The Age of innocence even though the latter is probably better written.

Also love Wives and Daughters. Great Movie too. It reminded me of Austen.

Also, the Milton sisters wrote some really great books. They themselves had such insane lives!

And here are some younger audience titles that are awesome: The Penderwicks (I think of it as a modern Little Women or Anne of Green Gables), A Northern LIght (really pretty writing and setting), White Cat (mafia meets magic)

I just realized every one of these books were written by women. There it is.

  6. I don't really have any book suggestions. I'm trying to find some myself. I've been on a real drought of reading and it is starting to drive me crazy! I need some good books in my life. If you find anything good please share. :-)

But this reminds me of A. She actually loves to go to sleep with her books. We read some bed time stories and when we are finished she hugs those books to her like they are a cherished teddy bear.
